What Is an .opus File, and How Do You Open It?
You’ve got a file that ends in .opus and nothing on your computer wants to open it. Maybe it came from a WhatsApp export, a Discord download or a voice recorder app. What is it, and how do you play it?
In short, an .opus file is an audio file. It’s a lot like an MP3, just newer and more efficient. This guide explains what OPUS files are, where they come from, and how to open one on any device.
The quick answer
- To play it now: Drag the file into our free online OGG player. It opens .opus files in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and newer Safari.
- For a desktop app: Install VLC. It plays .opus files on Windows, Mac and Linux.
- To share it: Convert it to MP3 so it plays on every device.
What is an .opus file?
An .opus file holds audio compressed with the Opus codec. The audio usually sits inside an Ogg container, the same container used by .ogg files.
Opus was built for speech and music over the internet. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) made it an official standard in 2012, as RFC 6716. The Xiph.Org Foundation, the group behind Ogg and Vorbis, helped create it, along with engineers from Skype and others.
What makes Opus special
- Great quality at small sizes. Speech sounds clear at very low bitrates. That’s why voice apps love it.
- Low delay. It works for live calls, not just recorded files.
- Flexible. It covers everything from phone-quality voice to full stereo music.
- Free and open. No licence fees, so any app can use it.
A short history
Opus grew out of two earlier codecs. SILK came from Skype and was built for speech. CELT came from Xiph.Org and was built for music with very low delay. Engineers merged the two ideas into one codec that switches between modes as needed.
The result shipped as a standard in 2012. Since then, Opus has become the default voice codec for much of the internet. Browsers, messaging apps and video platforms all adopted it, because it gives good sound at low data costs.
Where do .opus files come from?
You’ll most often see .opus files from:
- WhatsApp voice notes. Exported or shared voice messages are .opus files. See how to play WhatsApp voice notes on a PC.
- Telegram voice messages. These use Opus too, though the files often end in .ogg.
- Discord and other voice apps. Many record or download audio in Opus.
- Call and voice recorders. Several Android recorder apps save in Opus to save space.
- YouTube audio downloads. YouTube streams audio with Opus. Some download tools save it as .opus.
- Podcasts and audiobooks. Some creators use Opus for small file sizes.
Opus is also the required audio codec for WebRTC, the tech behind video calls in your browser. So even if you’ve never saved an .opus file, you’ve almost certainly heard Opus audio.
.opus vs .ogg vs .oga: what’s the difference?
These extensions often confuse people, because they overlap.
| Extension | Container | Usual audio codec | Common source |
|---|---|---|---|
| .opus | Ogg | Opus | WhatsApp, voice apps |
| .ogg | Ogg | Vorbis or Opus | Games, Telegram, music |
| .oga | Ogg | Any audio codec | Wikipedia, archives |
So an .opus file and an .ogg file can be almost the same thing. The .opus extension just tells you the audio inside is Opus. Any player that handles Ogg Opus can play both.
How to open an .opus file on Windows
Online player (no install)
- Open Chrome or Edge.
- Go to openoggfile.com.
- Drag in the .opus file and press play.
VLC
- Download VLC from videolan.org.
- Right-click the .opus file, choose Open with, and pick VLC media player.
Windows Media Player app
The Media Player app in Windows 11 may play some .opus files. If you get a “format not supported” error, use VLC or the online player instead. For more options, see how to open OGG files on Windows 11.
How to open an .opus file on Mac
QuickTime Player and the Music app don’t support Opus. Use one of these:
- Online player: Works in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari on macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later.
- VLC or IINA: Both are free and play .opus files.
See how to open OGG files on Mac for step-by-step help.
How to open an .opus file on iPhone and iPad
- iOS 18.4 or later: Open the file in the online player in Safari. Apple added Ogg Opus support to Safari in that version.
- Older iOS: Install VLC for Mobile from the App Store. Share the file from the Files app to VLC.
More details are in how to play OGG files on iPhone.
How to open an .opus file on Android
Android has supported Opus audio since Android 5.0. Most phones play .opus files from the file manager with a tap. If yours doesn’t, use:
- VLC for Android, free on the Play Store, or
- the online player in Chrome.
See our Android OGG player guide for more.
How to open an .opus file on Linux and Chromebook
- Linux: Most music and video players play Opus out of the box. VLC, mpv, Rhythmbox and Audacious all handle it.
- Chromebook: Double-click the file in the Files app, or use the online player in Chrome.
How to convert OPUS to MP3
MP3 plays on every device, car stereo and app. Convert your .opus file when you want to:
- send it to someone who can’t open .opus files,
- use it in a video or slideshow,
- keep it in a music library that doesn’t support Opus.
Online (one file)
- Open the file in the online OGG player.
- Pick 128 kbps for voice or 192 kbps for music.
- Click Download MP3.
You can also trim the file first by setting a start and end time.
VLC (many files)
- In VLC, open Media > Convert / Save (Windows) or File > Convert / Stream (Mac).
- Add your .opus files.
- Choose Audio – MP3 and start.
Will you lose quality?
A little, in theory, because both formats are lossy. In practice, a 128 kbps MP3 of a voice note sounds the same as the original. For music, use 192 kbps or higher.
Is an .opus file safe?
Yes. An .opus file is plain audio. It can’t run code on your computer. As with any file, only open files from people and sites you trust. Use a trusted player like VLC or a browser.
Does a file claim to be .opus but ask you to run a program or install a “special codec”? Don’t. That’s a common trick used to spread malware.
Can you edit .opus files?
Yes. Recent versions of Audacity, the free audio editor, can import and export Opus files. You can cut out silence, remove background noise or raise the volume, then save a new copy.
If your editor doesn’t accept .opus files, convert the file to WAV first. WAV is uncompressed, so it’s the safest format for editing. When you’re done, export to MP3 or back to Opus.
How big are .opus files?
Opus files are small, which is part of their appeal. The exact size depends on the bitrate the app chose. As a rough guide:
- A one-minute voice note at a low voice bitrate is often around 100 to 200 KB.
- The same minute as a 128 kbps MP3 is about 1 MB.
- As an uncompressed WAV, it’s around 10 MB.
That’s why converting to MP3 makes files bigger, and converting to WAV makes them much bigger. The online player shows the bitrate of your file, so you can pick a sensible MP3 setting.
Troubleshooting
“This file type is not supported”
Your app doesn’t handle Opus. Use VLC or the online player.
The file plays in VLC but not in the browser
Your browser may be old. Update it. On Mac and iPhone, you need Safari 18.4 or later for Opus in Ogg. Or use Chrome or Firefox.
The file won’t play anywhere
It may be broken or incomplete, which happens with interrupted downloads. Get a fresh copy. It’s also possible the file isn’t really Opus. The online player checks the file header and shows the actual codec.

FAQ
What program opens .opus files?
VLC, the online OGG player, IINA on Mac, and most Linux music players. Modern browsers can also play .opus files.
Is OPUS better than MP3?
At the same bitrate, Opus usually sounds better, especially for speech and low bitrates. MP3 wins on compatibility, because every device plays it.
Can Windows play .opus files?
Not reliably with built-in apps. Use VLC or the online player in Chrome or Edge.
How do I change .opus to .mp3?
Don’t just rename it. That won’t change the audio inside. Convert it with the online player or VLC.
Why does WhatsApp use Opus?
Opus keeps speech clear at very low bitrates. That means small voice notes, fast sending and less mobile data. It’s also free to use, so WhatsApp pays no licence fees.
Can I play .opus files in my car?
Most car stereos can’t read .opus files from a USB stick. Play the file on your phone over Bluetooth, or convert it to MP3 first. See how to play OGG files on a car stereo.
Are .opus and .ogg the same?
Very close. Both use the Ogg container. An .opus file always has Opus audio. An .ogg file may have Opus or Vorbis audio.
Final word
An .opus file is just modern, compact audio, most often a voice message. To open it, drop it into the free online OGG player or install VLC. And when you need it to play everywhere, convert it to MP3 in a few seconds.
