How to open an OGG file online in 3 steps

You don't need to install anything to open an OGG file. This online OGG player reads the file on your own device and plays it with the audio engine that is already built into your browser. The whole thing takes a few seconds:

  1. Choose your file

Click Choose file or drag your .ogg, .oga, .ogv or .opus file onto the box at the top of the page.

  2. Listen straight away

Press play. Use the waveform to jump to any moment, change the speed from 0.5× to 2×, and adjust the volume.

  3. Convert if you need to

Want the file on an iPhone or in a video editor? Trim it if you like, then download it as MP3 or WAV.

That is all there is to it. The OGG file opener works the same way on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, Android and iPhone, as long as you use an up-to-date browser. Chrome, Firefox and Edge give the best results.

What is an OGG file?

OGG is a free, open multimedia format developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation. Strictly speaking, "Ogg" is a container. It is a wrapper that holds one or more streams of audio or video, together with information such as the title, artist and duration. The actual sound inside the container is compressed with a codec, and that codec decides how the file sounds and which players can open it.

Because the format is open and royalty-free, anyone can use it without paying licence fees. That is why OGG files turn up in so many places: messaging apps, video games, Wikipedia, podcasts, open-source software and streaming services. Most people only run into the format when a file refuses to open on their phone or computer. Then they search for a way to open the OGG file, and that is what this page is for.

Codecs you will find inside an OGG file

  • Vorbis: the classic OGG audio codec, widely used for music and game sound effects. It sounds better than MP3 at the same file size.
  • Opus: a newer, very efficient codec that is excellent for speech. WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord and many voice-calling apps use it.
  • FLAC: lossless audio. Sometimes it is stored inside an Ogg container instead of a regular .flac file.
  • Speex: an older speech codec, now largely replaced by Opus.
  • Theora: the video codec used in most .ogv video files.

When you open a file with this tool, it reads the file header and tells you which codec is inside, together with the duration, the number of channels, the sample rate and the average bitrate. It works as a simple OGG file viewer as well as a player.

OGG file extensions explained

ExtensionWhat it containsTypical source
.oggAudio, usually Vorbis or OpusGames, music downloads, Telegram voice messages
.ogaAudio only (official audio extension)Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, audio archives
.opusOpus audio in an Ogg containerWhatsApp voice notes, recordings from voice apps
.ogvVideo (Theora) plus audioOlder web videos, Wikimedia Commons
.spxSpeex speech audioOlder voice recorders and VoIP tools

All of these can be opened with the OGG player above. If you have an OGA file you want to listen to, a WhatsApp .opus voice note, or a sound file taken from a game folder, just drop it in.

A simple OGG player with everything you need

Most online OGG players stop at a play button. This one gives you the tools you actually need when you are dealing with an unfamiliar audio file, and it keeps things simple enough that anyone can use it on a phone.

Instant playback

Your OGG file starts playing the moment you choose it. You don't wait for an upload or a conversion first.

Visual waveform

See the whole recording at a glance and click anywhere on the waveform to jump to that point.

Speed control

Speed up long voice messages to 1.5× or 2×, or slow things down to 0.5× to catch every word.

OGG to MP3 & WAV

Download your file as MP3 at 96 to 320 kbps, or as uncompressed WAV for editing software.

Trim audio

Set a start and end point to keep only the part you need, then save just that section.

Private by design

Your audio never leaves your device. Nothing is uploaded, stored or shared with anyone.

How to play OGG files on any device

The quickest way to play an OGG file on any device is to open it with the online OGG file player on this page. If you'd rather use an app you already have, or if you open OGG files every day, here is what works on each system.

Windows 10 and 11

The Media Player app in recent versions of Windows 11 plays most OGG audio. On Windows 10, or if the file won't open, install the free Web Media Extensions package from the Microsoft Store. It adds Ogg Vorbis and Theora support to Windows.

Another option is VLC Media Player, which is free and plays every OGG variant without any extra codecs. Or simply open the file in Chrome or Edge using the tool above.

Mac (macOS)

QuickTime Player and the Music app do not play OGG files. You can:

  • use this online OGG player in Chrome or Firefox,
  • install the free VLC or IINA app, or
  • convert the file to MP3 here and open it in Music.

iPhone and iPad

Safari plays OGG audio from iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4. Older versions cannot, and Chrome or Firefox will not help, because every iPhone browser uses the same engine as Safari. Your best options:

  • open this page in Safari on iOS 18.4 or later,
  • convert the OGG file to MP3 with the tool and save it to Files, or
  • install VLC for Mobile from the App Store.

Android

Android has supported OGG from the start, so most file managers and music apps play it with a tap. If your phone's player refuses a particular file, for example an .opus voice note, open this page in Chrome, tap Choose file and select it from your Downloads or WhatsApp folder.

Linux

OGG is at home on Linux. Almost every distribution plays it out of the box with the default music or video player, whether that is GNOME Videos, Rhythmbox, Elisa, Audacious or VLC. The online player is still handy when you want to trim a file or convert it to MP3 quickly.

Chromebook

ChromeOS includes a built-in media player that opens most OGG audio files from the Files app. For .opus files, trimming or converting, use the online OGG player on this page. It runs in Chrome, so it works on every Chromebook.

Where do OGG files come from?

If you have never saved an OGG file on purpose, you might wonder how one ended up on your device. These are the most common sources:

  • WhatsApp voice messages. When you export a chat or save a voice note, WhatsApp stores it as an .opus file, which is Opus audio in an Ogg container. Many people search for a way to play these on a computer.
  • Telegram voice messages. Telegram voice notes are Opus-encoded .ogg files. They play inside the app but not always once you save them elsewhere.
  • Video games. Many games, including Minecraft and lots of indie titles, store their music and sound effects as OGG files. Modders and curious players often want to listen to them outside the game.
  • Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Pronunciations, historic recordings and national anthems on Wikipedia are often published as .oga, .ogg or .ogv files.
  • Music and streaming. Some streaming services have used Ogg Vorbis to deliver music, and many independent musicians share tracks in OGG because of its good quality at small sizes.
  • Screen and voice recorders. Browser-based recorders and open-source apps such as Audacity can export straight to OGG.

Whatever the source, you open the OGG file the same way: drop the file into the player and press play.

How to play WhatsApp and Telegram voice notes on a computer

Voice messages are the most common reason people need an OGG player. The file plays fine inside the chat app, but once you save it to your computer or email it to yourself, Windows or macOS may not know what to do with it. Here is the easiest way to listen to it:

  1. Get the file onto your computer. In WhatsApp, open the chat, long-press the voice note and choose Share, then send it to yourself by email or save it to Google Drive. Or use Export chat with media. In Telegram Desktop, right-click the voice message and choose Save As.
  2. Open it here. Drag the .opus or .ogg file onto the player at the top of this page. It plays straight away, and you can speed it up to get through long messages faster.
  3. Keep a copy that plays everywhere. If you want to archive the message or send it to someone on an iPhone, click Download MP3. The MP3 opens on any phone, computer or media player.

The same steps work for voice notes from Signal, Discord and other apps that record in Opus. Because the tool never uploads anything, it is a safe way to handle private conversations.

OGG vs MP3 vs WAV: which format should you use?

OGG is a very good format, but it is not the most compatible one. Here is how it compares with the two formats you are most likely to convert it to:

OGG (Vorbis / Opus)MP3WAV
CompressionLossy, very efficientLossyUncompressed
Quality at small sizesExcellent, especially Opus for speechGoodNot applicable (large files)
File size (1 min, typical)0.2 to 1.2 MB1 to 2.4 MBAbout 10 MB
Plays on iPhone / MacOnly on newer versionsYesYes
Plays in car stereos & TVsSometimesAlmost alwaysOften
Best forGames, voice notes, web audioSharing and everyday listeningEditing and production
LicenceOpen and royalty-freePatents expired, free to useFree to use

In short: keep your files as OGG if they already play where you need them. They are smaller and sound great. Convert to MP3 when you need a file that plays everywhere, for example to send to an iPhone user or to add to a playlist. Convert to WAV if you want to edit the audio in software that doesn't accept OGG.

How to convert OGG to MP3 without uploading

Most online converters upload your file to their servers, convert it there and ask you to download the result. This one works differently. The conversion happens inside your browser, on your device. It's faster for small files, it works on slow connections, and your recording stays private.

  1. Open your OGG file in the player above.
  2. Optional: type a Start and End time, or play the file and click Set to current at the right moments, to keep only part of the audio.
  3. Choose the MP3 quality. 128 kbps is plenty for voice messages. Pick 192 or 320 kbps for music.
  4. Click Download MP3, or Download WAV for an uncompressed copy.

Tip: converting from OGG to MP3 cannot add quality that was not in the original file. Choosing a bitrate higher than the source only makes the file bigger. For WhatsApp or Telegram voice notes, 96 or 128 kbps sounds identical to the original.

Can't open an OGG file? Try these fixes

If an OGG file won't play here or anywhere else, one of these is usually the reason:

1. Your browser or app doesn't support the codec

Safari before iOS 18.4 and some older browsers cannot play OGG. On a computer, open this page in Chrome, Firefox or Edge and try again. On an iPhone, update to iOS 18.4 or use the VLC app. For .ogv videos, only Firefox still shows the picture, but every modern browser can play the sound.

2. The file is incomplete or damaged

An interrupted download or a broken transfer from a phone can cut the file short. If the waveform stops early or the file won't load at all, download or copy the file again from the original source.

3. It isn't really an OGG file

Sometimes a file has been renamed to .ogg even though it is actually an MP3, M4A or something else. The tool checks the file header and tells you if the content doesn't look like an Ogg stream. In that case, try renaming the extension back or ask the sender what format it really is.

4. The file is very large

Playback works for large files, but the waveform and conversion need to load the whole file into memory. Above about 400 MB they are switched off to keep your browser stable. For very long recordings, a desktop app like Audacity or VLC is the better choice.

5. There is no sound

Check the volume slider in the player, your device volume and, on phones, the silent switch. Also make sure your audio is going to the right output device, such as headphones or Bluetooth speakers.

Is it safe to open OGG files online?

With this tool, yes. Many "free online converters" upload every file you give them, keep copies for an unknown time and fill the page with pop-ups. This OGG file opener was built to avoid that:

  • No upload. The file is read directly by your browser. You can check this yourself by turning off Wi-Fi after the page has loaded. The player keeps working.
  • No storage. Nothing is saved on our side, because nothing ever reaches us.
  • No account. You don't need to sign up or give an email address to play or convert your files.
  • No installation. There is no software to download, so there is no risk of bundled adware.

That makes it a good choice for personal voice notes, interview recordings, lectures and anything else you wouldn't want sitting on a stranger's server.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open an OGG file?

The fastest way is to drop the file into the OGG player at the top of this page. It opens in your browser straight away, with no software to install and no upload. On a computer you can also use a free desktop player such as VLC, which opens every kind of OGG file on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Is this online OGG player free?

Yes. Opening, playing, trimming and converting OGG files is completely free. There is no sign-up, no watermark, no daily limit and no file size cap apart from what your own device can handle.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The player runs inside your web browser, so the file is read from your own device and never sent anywhere. That makes it safe for private voice messages, recordings of meetings and anything else you would rather keep to yourself. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool keeps working.

Why won't my iPhone play OGG files?

Safari only added OGG support in iOS 18.4. On older versions, no iPhone browser can play OGG, because Chrome and Firefox on iPhone use the same engine as Safari. Update to iOS 18.4 or later and use the player on this page, install the free VLC for Mobile app, or convert the file to MP3 on a computer.

What is the difference between OGG, OGA and OPUS files?

They all use the same Ogg container. .ogg is the general extension and usually holds Vorbis or Opus audio. .oga is the official extension for audio-only Ogg files. .opus is used for Ogg files that contain Opus audio, which is what WhatsApp uses for voice notes. This player opens all three.

Can I convert an OGG file to MP3?

Yes. After you open the file, choose an MP3 quality between 96 and 320 kbps and click Download MP3. You can also download a WAV file, and you can set a start and end time first if you only need part of the recording.

Can I play OGV video files here?

Yes, the tool accepts .ogv video. Firefox shows the picture and plays the sound. Chrome, Edge and Safari have dropped the Theora video codec that most OGV files use, so in those browsers you will hear the audio and can extract it as MP3, but the picture will not show.

Does the OGG player work on Android?

Yes. Android supports OGG natively, and this page works in Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet and other Android browsers. Tap Choose file, pick your OGG file from Downloads, WhatsApp or Telegram, and it plays immediately.

Why does my OGG file not play at all?

The file may be incomplete (for example a download that stopped early), renamed from another format, or using a rare codec such as Speex. Try opening it in Chrome or Firefox first. If it still fails, the tool will show a message explaining what went wrong.

Is OGG better quality than MP3?

At the same bitrate, Ogg Vorbis and especially Opus usually sound better than MP3, and Opus is excellent for speech at very small file sizes. MP3 wins on compatibility, because every device and car stereo plays it. Converting OGG to MP3 will not improve quality, but it makes the file play everywhere.
