How to Convert OPUS to MP3 (Free, on Any Device)
OPUS files are everywhere now. WhatsApp voice notes, call recordings, Discord clips and YouTube audio downloads often come as .opus files. They sound great and stay tiny. But plenty of players, phones and apps still can’t open them.
Converting OPUS to MP3 solves that. This guide shows you how to do it for free on any device. It also explains why your MP3 will be bigger than the original. And it shows which bitrate keeps it sounding right.
The quick answer
- Open our free online OPUS to MP3 converter.
- Drop in your .opus file.
- Choose 128 kbps for voice or 192 kbps for music.
- Click Download MP3.
Your file is converted in your browser. It’s never uploaded.
What is an OPUS file?
An .opus file contains audio compressed with the Opus codec, usually inside an Ogg container. Opus became an internet standard in 2012. It was designed for voice and music over the internet, so it keeps quality high at very low bitrates.
That’s why apps love it. A WhatsApp voice note might use a fraction of the data an MP3 would need for the same clarity. For a deeper look, see what an .opus file is and how to open it.
Why convert OPUS to MP3?
Opus is technically better than MP3. But MP3 wins on compatibility. Convert your file when:
- Someone can’t play it. Older iPhones, QuickTime and Windows Media Player Legacy don’t support Opus.
- An app rejects it. Many video editors, slideshow tools and upload forms only accept MP3 or WAV.
- You’re making a USB stick for a car. Few car stereos play Opus.
- You want to archive it in a format that will play in 20 years without special software.
Method 1: Convert OPUS to MP3 online (no upload)
This works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox on any computer. It also works in Chrome on Android and in Safari on iOS 18.4 or later.
- Go to openoggfile.com.
- Drag the .opus file onto the page, or click Choose file.
- Press play to check it’s the right file.
- Scroll to Convert & download.
- Pick the MP3 quality.
- Click Download MP3.
The MP3 appears in your Downloads folder.
Trim first if you like
Only need part of a long voice note? Set the Start and End times before you download. Click Set to current while the audio plays, or type the times. The button changes to Download MP3 (trimmed).
Private by design
Voice notes are personal. Most free converters upload files to a server. This one doesn’t. The browser decodes and encodes the audio on your device, so nothing leaves it.
Method 2: Convert OPUS to MP3 with VLC
VLC is a free player that can also convert.
Windows and Linux:
- Open VLC and choose Media > Convert / Save.
- Click Add and pick the .opus file.
- Click Convert / Save and choose Audio – MP3.
- Click Browse, name the output with .mp3 at the end, and click Start.
Mac:
- Choose File > Convert / Stream.
- Drag in the file and choose Audio – MP3.
- Click Save as File, pick a location and click Save.
For more detail, see how to convert OGG to MP3 with VLC. The steps are the same for Opus.
Method 3: Convert OPUS to MP3 with Audacity
Audacity is free and lets you edit before converting. Recent versions open Opus files directly.
- Open Audacity and choose File > Open. Pick the .opus file.
- Optional: use Effect > Volume and Compression > Loudness Normalization to even out a quiet voice note.
- Choose File > Export Audio and pick MP3.
- Set the quality and click Export.
If your Audacity can’t open the file, update to the latest version. See how to convert OGG to MP3 in Audacity for batch conversion with Macros.
Method 4: Convert OPUS to MP3 with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a free command-line tool, great for batches.
One file
ffmpeg -i input.opus -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.mp3
A whole folder (Mac and Linux)
for f in *.opus; do ffmpeg -i "$f" -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k "${f%.opus}.mp3"; done
A whole folder (Windows PowerShell)
Get-ChildItem *.opus | ForEach-Object { ffmpeg -i $_.FullName -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k ($_.BaseName + ".mp3") }
Change 128k to 192k for music.
Why is the MP3 bigger than the OPUS file?
This surprises a lot of people. You convert a 150 KB voice note and get a 1 MB MP3. Did something go wrong?
No. It’s how the formats work. Opus is much more efficient than MP3, especially for speech. A WhatsApp voice note may use a low Opus bitrate, well under 32 kbps, and still sound clear. MP3 at that bitrate would sound muffled and robotic.
So to keep the same clarity, the MP3 needs a higher bitrate, and that means a bigger file. The extra size isn’t extra quality. It’s the cost of using an older format that plays everywhere.
Which MP3 bitrate should you pick?
| Content | MP3 bitrate | Mono or stereo |
|---|---|---|
| Voice notes, calls, lectures | 96 to 128 kbps | Mono is fine |
| Podcasts with music | 128 to 160 kbps | Stereo |
| Music | 192 kbps or higher | Stereo |
Avoid very low MP3 bitrates like 32 or 48 kbps. They save space but sound poor, even for speech.
Mono vs stereo: most voice notes are mono. Keeping them mono halves the MP3 size with no loss. The online converter keeps the original channel layout automatically.
How to convert OPUS to MP3 on your phone
Android
- Find the .opus file in Files by Google or your file manager. WhatsApp voice notes live in Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Voice Notes.
- Open Chrome and go to openoggfile.com.
- Tap Choose file, pick the .opus file and tap Download MP3.
iPhone
On iOS 18.4 or later, save the file to Files, then use the same steps in Safari. On older iOS, Safari can’t read Opus, so convert on a computer. Our guide on converting OGG to MP3 on iPhone covers this in detail.
What about Opus in .webm files?
Some tools save Opus audio inside a WebM container instead of Ogg. You’ll see files ending in .webm, often from YouTube audio downloads. The audio is the same Opus codec, but the container is different.
Our online converter is built for Ogg files, so it won’t open .webm. Use VLC or FFmpeg instead. With FFmpeg, the command is the same as above. Just change the input name:
ffmpeg -i input.webm -vn -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.mp3
Only download and convert audio you have the right to use. Many sites’ terms don’t allow downloading their content.
Keep your files organized
Converted voice notes pile up fast. A few habits help:
- Rename files with the date and a short note, like 2025-04-09 Dad directions.mp3. Names like PTT-20250409-WA0003 mean nothing a year later.
- Keep one folder for converted voice notes and another for originals.
- Delete originals only after you’ve checked the MP3 plays properly.
- Back up the folder to cloud storage or an external drive if the recordings matter to you.
Should you convert to M4A instead?
If the file is going to an Apple device, M4A (AAC) is another good choice. AAC is more efficient than MP3, so files are smaller at the same quality, and every Apple device plays it.
- VLC, Audacity (with FFmpeg) and FFmpeg can all make M4A.
- With FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i input.opus -c:a aac -b:a 96k output.m4a
For the widest compatibility, though, MP3 is still the safest bet.
Troubleshooting
“Unsupported file” or nothing happens
Check the file really is Opus. Some apps save .opus files with no extension, or with a different one. The online converter reads the file header and tells you what’s inside.
The MP3 sounds worse than the OPUS file
The MP3 bitrate may be too low. Convert again at 128 kbps or higher.
The MP3 is silent
The original file may be incomplete. This happens with interrupted downloads or large chat exports. Get a fresh copy and try again.
My old Audacity won’t open .opus
Update Audacity. Recent versions support Opus import.
